New York Welsh Holiday Party
Dec

New York Welsh Holiday Party

Celebrating another year & welcoming some good luck for 2024!

Join us for an evening of good friends, fun, food and libations. There will be plenty of cheer, games and prizes to boot. PLEASE RSVP BELOW!

The Liberty is offering a special holiday roast dinner by pre-order only and subject to at least 20-pre-orders. Roast Prime Rib with gravy, stuffing, Yorkshire pudding, mashed potatoes, veg and horseradish sauce. The roast dinner is $58 total ($45 plus gratuity and tax). The Liberty’s regular menu will also be available to order a la carte.

This year, we’re celebrating with a Mari Lwyd theme. In the spirit of the playful banter that is part of this tradition, we’re inviting members to show off their own Mari Lwyd creation or perform their own version of the repartee between the Mari’s group attempting to gain entry and the home/pub-owner who needs convincing (playfully rude knock-knock jokes will be accepted). New York Welsh and the Welsh Congregation are hosting a crafts event earlier in the day where participants can create and/or finish their creations!

The Tradition of the Mari Lwyd

Mari Lwyd (pron.: mar-i-loy-d; Y Fari Lwyd in Welsh) is a wassailing folk custom found in South Wales, although the tradition declined significantly in the 20th century. The tradition entails the use of a hobby horse made from a horse's skull mounted on a pole to represent the Mari Lwyd, which was carried by an individual hidden under a sackcloth. The Mari is well-known to be mischievous – trying to steal things and chase people she likes – as she goes about her bidding.

A merry group carries the Mari Lwyd to local houses, where they request entry in an exchange of clever rhymes through song with the person who lives there. The householders are expected to deny the Mari Lwyd’s group entry until convinced. If the Mari Lwyd and her gang gain entry, they are provided food and drink and the household is said to have good luck for the year.

Please RSVP below and add this event to your calendar.

Knock-Knock: Mari Lwyd Crafts & Show-and-Tell

  • Rutgers Church - 5th Floor David Russel Room (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This is a family/kid-centric event introducing the tradition of the Mari Lwyd with an afternoon of storytelling, singing and crafting in New York City.

Attendees will be treated to a spoken narrative of the tradition and a performance demonstrating the Mari-Lwyd-and-host-bantering as the Mari Lwyd seeks to convince the host to let her group enter. Attendees may craft and decorate their own Mari Lwyd with ribbons, buttons, sequins, paint and markers. The afternoon will culminate in “show and tell”, where our crafters will be invited up to the stage to show-off their version of the Mari Lwyd and sing a banter or tell a “knock-knock” joke.

The Tradition of the Mari Lwyd

Mari Lwyd (pron.: mar-i-loy-d; Y Fari Lwyd (ee-var-i-loy-d) in Welsh) is a wassailing folk custom found in South Wales, although the tradition declined significantly in the 20th century. The tradition entails the use of a hobby horse made from a horse's skull mounted on a pole to represent the Mari Lwyd, which was carried by an individual hidden under a sackcloth. This event is FREE, but space is limited. PLEASE RESERVE YOUR FREE SPOT BELOW!

This event is immediately followed by the Welsh Congregation’s December/Christmas service and te bach downstairs in the church, which is also free and open to all.

Monthly Meetup with Special Guest Pamela Petro

New York Welsh hosts a monthly meet-up at The Liberty NYC in Manhattan, New York City. In September we are joined by Pamela Petro, author of The Long Field, Wales and the Presence of Absence, a Memoir. For readers of H Is for Hawk, an intimate memoir of belonging and loss and a mesmerizing travelogue through the landscapes and language of Wales.

  • Shortlisted for the 2022 Wales Book of the Year Award

  • One of 6 Best Travel Books of 2021! — The Financial Times

  • One of the 8 Best Travel Books of the Year! — The Telegraph

RSVP on the form below. It’s not required for attendance, but we appreciate the heads up to help us plan our events. Also, you can add this event to your calendar.

Hiraeth is a Welsh word that's famously hard to translate. Literally, it can mean "long field" but generally translates into English, inadequately, as "homesickness." At heart, hiraeth suggests something like a bone-deep longing for an irretrievable place, person, or time—an acute awareness of the presence of absence.

In The Long Field, Pamela Petro braids essential hiraeth stories of Wales with tales from her own life—as an American who found an ancient home in Wales, as a gay woman, as the survivor of a terrible Amtrak train crash, and as the daughter of a parent with dementia. Through the pull and tangle of these stories and her travels throughout Wales, hiraeth takes on radical new meanings. There is traditional hiraeth of place and home, but also queer hiraeth; and hiraeth triggered by technology, immigration, ecological crises, and our new divisive politics. On this journey, the notion begins to morph from a uniquely Welsh experience to a universal human condition, from deep longing to the creative responses to loss that Petro sees as the genius of Welsh culture. It becomes a tool to understand ourselves in our time.
